KAPAR (Korean Association for Particle and Aerosol Research) was found in 1994 by 89 members to promote research on aerosol and particle technology in Korea. In 1994 Prof. S.S. Kim (KAIST) was elected to be president and Dr. G.C. Moon (KIST) and J.W. Lee (POSTEC) vice presidents for the 1st term (year 1994-1996). Until 1998, KAPAR organized workshops on particle and aerosol technology twice in a year in spring and fall. Prominent domestic and foreign scientists were invited to present most up-to-date review and the state of the art in the field. Annual KAPAR meeting has also been held in conjunction with the fall workshop. KAPAR has been publishing Proceedings at each meeting and Newsletters regularly (Sec. 4 Publications for further details).
The members of KAPAR recognized the need for the interdisciplinary exchange of technical information. Thus, they organized the first Korean Conference on Aerosol and Particle in 1999 in place of the annual spring workshop. The second conference was held in July, 2000 and the third conference in 2002.
KAPAR hosted the 2nd Asian Aerosol Conference from 1st to 4th of July 2001 in Pusan, Korea. The 1st Asian Aerosol Conference was held in Nagoya, Japan in 1999 and the members of KAPAR presented thirty-three papers, the second most following the number of Japanese papers in the 1st Asian Aerosol Conference. The Conference was held under the auspices of the Asian Aerosol Research Assembly (AARA), which had been established in 1999 to promote co-operation between aerosol research associations in Asian countries. Korean papers numbered 88 from a total of 213 in the 2nd Asian Aerosol Conference. In conjunction with the 2nd Asian Aerosol Conference, International Symposium on Nanoparticles: Aerosols and Materials (July 5-6, 2001, Pusan, Korea) was also held in the same venue.
KAPAR has also organized the short courses, the open lecture on ¡°Particle and Aerosol Measurement¡±, in every summer to spread the aerosol technology and to train and encourage young scientists and engineers since 1995. About 30 students have been attended the short courses every year and seven courses have been provided until 2001.
KAPAR has been a founding member association of Asian Aerosol Research Assembly (AARA) and plays a key role in cooperation with JAAST (Japan Association of Aerosol Science and Technology) and Asian aerosol research association such as organizing Asian Aerosol Conferences. Now, Prof. S. B. Park of KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) serves as the president of KAPAR for the 4th term (year 2001-2002)
